The basilica has a rich history, and it remains one of the four Papal churches of Rome. The church also serves as the cathedral of the diocese of Rome, giving it the status of the most important church in the city.

Places to visit in the Archbasilica

Some of the highlights of the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran include the gothically decorated papal altar, twelve statues representing the apostles, and the frescos on the ceiling. The church also contains six papal tombs and the famous Scala Sancta, or ‘Holy Steps’. Don’t miss the obelisk on Piazza San Giovanni square, one of the largest and oldest obelisks in Rome.
