The Basilica di San Clemente al Laterano is a special church in Rome, located at Via di San Giovanni in Laterano. The basilica is not as touristy as other churches in Rome, but it offers a unique experience to learn about the history of Rome through its different layers. The current church, dedicated to pope Clement I, was built on top of a 4th-century church during the 12th century. Below that, many more Roman foundations have been found, including remnants of Roman houses from 500-27 BCE. It is thought that these houses were destroyed by a fire during the reign of emperor Nero and later used as foundations. On top of these foundations, another large house was found that had been built in the 1st century and served as a secret church for pope Clement. In the 4th century, a basilica was built on top of the secret church, dedicated to the tomb of Saint Clement. The basilica is also known for its rich decorations by painters and sculptors. The church has undergone various reconstructions and excavations, and visitors can journey through its different layers of history. Visiting the basilica of San Clemente is free, but entry for the excavations on the lower two levels will cost 10 euros. Dress codes apply, so please make sure to cover your knees and shoulders and do not wear flip-flops. The basilica offers underground tours, providing a unique insight into the history of Rome. It is truly a hidden gem among the many attractions in Rome.
