The Victor Emmanuel II Monument, also known as Altare della Patria or Wedding Cake, can be found on the Piazza Venezia square in Rome. It commemorates Italy’s first king, Victor Emmanuel II, and the unification of Italy in 1861. Designed by Giuseppe Sacconi and built between 1895 and 1911, the monument is made of white marble from the region of Brescia. With its large size, it has earned several nicknames such as the Wedding Cake, the Dentures, and the Typewriter. The monument features several sights, including the large bronze horse-back statue of Victor Emmanuel II, goddess Victoria statues, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Visitors can also explore the Museo del Risorgimento and enjoy a beautiful view of Rome from the rooftop. The monument is located between Piazza Venezia square and Capitoline Hill, near other attractions such as the Forum of Trajan and Trajan’s Market.
