ATAC Tap & Go lets you validate travel with a supported contactless payment card or a compatible payment device. The most useful rule is simple: choose one personal payment medium and keep using it. A plastic card, the same card on a phone and the same card on a watch are different media for the system. Switching between them can prevent your journeys being recognised together.
Prepare before reaching the reader
Check the accepted card networks and payment requirements on ATAC's official page. A contactless symbol alone does not guarantee that every card is enabled for the transaction. If you plan to use a phone or watch, have its payment method ready and enough battery for your journey and any inspection. Keep a practical alternative if your first payment method is refused.
Each traveller needs their own suitable ticket or personal payment medium. ATAC describes Tap & Go as an individual service: one card cannot be repeatedly tapped to cover a group. Agree on the arrangement before a crowded gate, especially if only one person has been organising transport for everyone.
Tap and confirm acceptance
Present only the card or device you intend to use. Take a physical card out of a wallet containing other contactless cards so the reader does not detect several at once. Wait for the green confirmation; at a metro gate, wait for it to unlock as well. Passing a card near the reader without a successful response is not a validated journey.
On supported surface transport, use the contactless reader and check its response rather than assuming a bank notification will prove acceptance. If the payment fails, do not continue on the assumption that it will be sorted out later. Seek staff assistance where available or use another valid way to obtain and validate your ticket before travelling.
Keep the same medium on transfers
Tap again when changing vehicles as instructed by ATAC, using exactly the same card or device. A qualifying transfer within the ticket's validity is not automatically another fare. The single ticket is valid for 100 minutes from the first tap, but metro use is limited to one journey under the applicable interchange conditions; it is not unlimited exit and re-entry.
For example, if you began with a physical card, do not use its phone version for the next bus just because both draw on the same bank account. The same applies between a phone and a watch. Make the choice once, then keep that medium accessible instead of burying it in your bag after the first gate.
Understand best fare without counting every tap as a ticket
On the official Italian page checked on 10 October 2026, ATAC applies the Roma 24-hour price of €8.50 when a sixth chargeable BIT is reached within the 24-hour calculation period. Transfers within an existing ticket's validity are not six separate purchased BITs merely because you tapped six times. Check the current conditions and fare before using this as your budget for a later trip.
The calculation relies on the same medium and eligible journeys. It is not a promise of a universal daily cap covering all transport operators, airport trains or several travellers. Nor should it be confused with a calendar day ending at midnight. Choose the transport that suits the day, rather than taking unnecessary rides to “reach” a cap.
Inspections, charges and a refused card
For an ATAC inspection, present the card or device used to validate. Other operators and railway services can have additional control requirements, so read their coverage rules before extending a trip beyond the metro and ATAC surface network. In particular, do not treat Tap & Go as automatic permission to board every airport service.
ATAC explains that an initial bank notification may be a pre-authorisation rather than the final fare. Check completed transactions and the official MyAtac information if you need to reconcile charges. Do not diagnose a settled overcharge from the first phone alert alone. A refused tap can result from card eligibility, blocking, expiry or other payment issues; consult the issuer and use a valid alternative for the immediate journey.
Set up the walk separately
Before heading to your Rome Walks start, confirm the transport, payment method and return option. Download available audio content while connected, leaving battery for navigation and a payment device if you use one. At the station exit, put away the payment card only after the travel step is complete. A little preparation keeps a simple approach journey from taking over your walking day.
